Beaujo-SI y Beaujo-NO

Since I am a foodie, I´m going to dedicate the first post of our trip to Sevilla to all the delicious food we ate.

Sevilla, Seville, boquerones

The first place was recommended by the hotel´s concierge. It´s located at San Jacinto Street and it´s called Miami (curious, right?) Me arrived to Sevilla on a Monday (right after Holy Week) so you can imagine there was nothing left. Only fried anchovies (boquerones) that we had with manzanilla (a typical wine) hoping to have better luck the rest of the days. Nonetheless they were delicious!

That afternoon, after walking around the city, we toasted to Gin & Tonics at a place with a breathtaking view of the city. It´s just at the begining of Isabel II bridge, from Triana to the bullring. I don´t know if the food of the place is good but the view is worth the visit.

Sevilla, Seville,

The second day, taking into consideration my cousin´s recommendations, we ate at La Bodeguita de Antonio Romero. It´s right behind the bullring and all Sevilla gathers there whenever there are bull fights. The star dish (according to the recommendations) is the Piripi a gourmet sandwich with pork, peppers and other ingredients that I´m not going to tell, so that they surprise you when you go and have them. All the other dishes that we ordered were succulent and the place was packed and very festive.

To finish our day, that night after walking around the city, we ended at the Lonja del Barranco Market, similar to the one in Madrid called San Miguel. Great cured ham, grilled prawns and red wine! A wonderful way to end the day.

Sevilla, Seville,

Another place worth mentioning is La Casa Fundida (The Molten House) at Triana´s Market. This one wasn´t on the list and we discovered it by chance (it was pouring and we were near the market) and let me tell you what a discovery! Everything was excellent!! Specially the salmorejo (kind of gazpacho -soup- made with bread, egg, pepper, tomato, garlic, salt and water, all shredded and beaten to a fine puree) and Spanish sausage (chorizo) to hell.

Hope you enjoy the recommendations and if you have other let me know!!

el alma de Luzón

red wine

It has been a few days since we visited the Luzon winery. We took advantage of one of those weekends where you have nothing to do, and drove there to see the winery and taste their wine. This winery is the fruit of several winemakers and, thanks to the new stockholders- since 2005- they´ve become what they are nowadays. A modern and innovative winery were tradition and modern techniques come together.

barricas vino

During the visit they explained how the produce their wine, the time it remains in the casks, the types they use (French or American Oak) and we even visited the Sanctuary, where they keep the wine that they don´t sell and that allows them to check how they evolve over time.

botellas vino

The tour ended with a wine tasting of three of the ones they produce. A white wine and two red ones. Both very good! It would have been nicer to have a smaller group during the visit. That way the tasting would have been nor personal and detailed... nonetheless we had a great time.

Since Fonse is visiting us,  this year we ventured to participate in the activities that Murcia´s September Fair has to offer. It is a festival, dating from 1266, when Alfonso X the Wise granted the honor, and it is held during the first half of September, in honor of the Virgin of Fuensanta. It is the most traditional festival in Murcia.  Apart from the fair, it offers other events such as: the Cattle Fair, the Bullfights, the "Orchards of the Pier"- with all the stands (barracas) where you can taste the products from Murcia´s orchard and the wines from Jumilla, the festival of Moors and Christians and ends with the Procession of the Virgin of Fuensanta. It's a super extensive program, with all kinds of activities for all age groups, that I'm sure you´ll will enjoy if you dare to come and celebrate with us!!

So on Thursday we dressed up and went to the Huertos. The atmosphere was great and lively, with lots of people, all having tapas or dinning at the stands (barracas). We sat at one called Bao Bar, very nice (mostly because, although it was outdoors, it had air conditioning and those water trickles that  mist and keep you cool) We ordered a few typical tapas from Murcia.-

Lightly breaded fried Anchovies
Marinera "Fisherman" Potato salad topped with an Anchovy on a Breadstick
Lemon tree leaf, covered in batter, fried and served with cinnamon and sugar

After our immersion in the Huertos, it was time to say farewell to the virgin. Bright and early because the Mass starts at 7:00 am in the Cathedral. There, apart from hearing Mass, you can wait for the Fuensanta to come out of the Cathedral, at the Belluga Square and accompany her in procession to her shrine in Algezares. We only waited for her at Square and then, had some churros with chocolate. Maybe next year I´ll walk all the way up and accompany her to the top!

with kiddos in Milan

There were many of you who told me I was crazy to go for so many days with kiddos to Milan! If that is your case, here are a few recommendations (apart from the traditional visits to the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Teatro Opera The Scalla and old town Milan) to make your stay with kiddos pleasant and enjoyable.

Parco Sempione, Acquario & Castello Sforzesco.

In the Sempione Park, old town Milan, a few blocks from the Duomo and stop number #1 of all the Tour bus lines, you´ll find the Castello Sforzesco. The Visconti family started its construction  in 1358 and in 1450, when Francesco Sforza beat the Republicans, he began its reconstruction and transformed it into his residence. It opens daily from 7:00 to 18:00 (winter) 19:00 (summer) and the entrance to the castle is free. There are a variety of museums and permanent and itinerant exhibitions in the castle. For more info and prices this is the official link

After visiting the castle, you can take a walk in the Sempione Park, have a gelato (a must in Italy) and sit on the grass or on a bench and watch people go by, let the kiddos play outside (and give mine some time to take selfies, lol) In the park you´ll find the Triennale Palace, the Arch of Peace, Milan Arena, the Civic Aquarium and the Branca Tower. It is a park with reserved spaces for dogs and kiosks with food and drinks.

After the gelati and a good walk you can visit the aquarium. The entrance, at least when we went, was free. Checking their website to post the official link, I find that as of July 2014, you have to  pay to get in ... 5€  and 3€  full and reduced, respectively.

Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia (10€ & 7€ completa y reducida respectivamente)

Founded in 1953, the museum is housed in a monastery from the early sixteenth century. Through the years they have collected and exposed objects and machines that teach key stages for scientific and technological development. The educational activities in their collections and interactive labs (i.labs) involve visitors in exciting experiences that lead to the discovery and exploration of science. This museum is does not open on Mondays and closes early 17:00 so you better visit it in the morning so they can make good use of what you pay for. It is so big that you can dedicate a whole day to see it or plan before entering the exhibition halls. We did not know it was so big and went in the afternoon so there were a few parts of the museum that we couldn´t visit.  Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia (10 € & € 7 full and reduced respectively)

In all the trips we make with the kiddos we always try to go to an art museum. This time around we visited the Modern Art Gallery-GAM built between 1790 and 1796 as the residence of Count Lodovico di Barbiano Belgiojoso. It's a royal villa that represents the Milanese Neoclassicism quite well. It houses collections of italian paintings and sculptures as well as other works and exhibitions. A part from seeing the exhibits it´s worth your while to take a look at the villa´s architecture; its ceilings and floors are just spectacular. As with the aquarium, we didn´t pay anything to enter.  In the official site it states that you have to. The same 5 € and 3 €. Nonetheless admission is free on Tuesdays from 14:00  and during the last opening hour (I wonder if that was the reason why we didn't pay ...) Open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30.

We didn´t take the tour  but I think those who are soccer lovers can enjoy it. We only saw it from the tourbus but I remember that we enjoyed the visit to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. So if you have one day to spare in Milan, I think it's a visit that´s worth doing. This is the official link

---and in the oldest ones even better! There are 18 lines and over 115kms of tracks! An adventure! Trams run by Milan since 1876 and were pulled by horses back then. They are one of the best ways to get around the city and you can get on trams from many different periods in time. From the most modern to the oldest ones (that reminded me of the ones in San Francisco)

Hope to have helped you plan your trip to Milan and well, you should also drink water from a public fountain and feed the pigeons, that´ll be the cherry on top of your trip!

Attending a wine tasting at the Estudio de Ana is always a pleasure for the senses! This time, and please allow me, it was also divine and with a celebrity and all! The tasting was given  by Juan Luis Garcia, one of the top 10 sommeliers from Spain and I got to sit next to him ! ! Too bad that at the time, I was not as aware of such a fact. I would have taken a pic, lol.
But let me gather my thoughts, I don´t want to wander  ….

The tasting began with a wink to the south of Spain, with Manzanilla, Fino (Sherry), Amontillado and Oloroso.  From there, we traveled north and tasted wines from Asturiasspecifically from Cangas del Narcea a terroir that the owners care with love. Its high slate concentration gives these broths a singular pivot . The menu, as always, succulent and paired perfectly with each of the 6 dishes that Freddy Salmeron, my favourite chef, cooked for us.

¡Comencemos!

Let's begin!
As usual the Studio opened the tasting with a soup. This one, if I remember correctly, was pumpkin and how was I transported to my childhood!  Not only for the taste but for the playful way of presenting it.

Pumpkin soup

By the time, we were already tasting the  Manzanilla "La Guita" by Rainera Martin Perez Son´s from Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz, Andalusia). It was soft, refined and elegant thanks to the Atlantic coastal air that bathes these grapes. It smelled of flower, yeast and almonds and it was so great with the dish  that  I baptised it Maximum Delight.

Esturión, Puerros, Microbizcocho y Caviar de tomate.
Sturgeon, Leeks, Microsponge and tomato caviar.

For the next dish, a sherry; in this case La Bota de Fino # 35 by Macharnudo Alto Navazos Team. This one is much more robust, said the experts, but it lacked the elegance of the Manzanilla .... the best part was that it went great with the  artichoke that is, from what I understand, one of the most difficult things  to pair.

Goby with Angus Bacon, Artichoke and Chestnuts.

The next two I´ll only mention, Sherry Amontillado "El Tresillo" and dry Oloroso  "Villapanés." These have their own post from when we attended the tasting by the wineries Emilio Hidalgo. I do have to tell you that the Oloroso was infinitely better with the white chocolate and blue cheese dessert we had that time around.... or perhaps, it was because it was my first experience with a Villapanés, and I was flabbergasted!

Dorada All I Pebre**, Crema de Hinojos y Nueces.
All I Pebre** Gilt-head bream, Fennel cream and Walnuts.

**The all-i-pebre ("garlic and red pepper" in Valencian) is a typical Valencian sauce used to cook fish.

Finally, the highlight of the night, the wines from Asturias by Dominio de Urogallo winery: Retortoiro, La  Zorrina & Red Pesico. These are wines made with Albarin, black Verdejo and Carrasquin grapes and the strains are centenarians. As I said at the beginning, the features of the environment in which it grows, a mining land, are present in the wine. It is an enviromentalist vineyard, where the vine is left alone and free to develop naturally. The three wines we tasted were young, in fact, they were bottled for our tasting that night. For me, a very a pleasant discovery.

Finally, as always a gold medal with what I like best, chocolate!! Of course with Pedro Ximenez and it was  scrumptious.
